Labour supporting Fairtrade
As we enter the second week of Fairtrade fortnight the Labour Government has announced it will double funds for Fairtrade labelling to £1.2 million over two years, continuing to lead the fight against global poverty.Douglas Alexander, Secretary of State for International Development said:
“Trade can be a powerful way of reducing poverty and the UK is firmly committed to achieving trade justice by improving trading opportunities for developing countries.
“This announcement will see Fairtrade labelling expand internationally and help more producers from the poorest countries export their products.”
Labour is committed to promoting Fairtrade products and has contributed £12 million to Fairtrade promotion since 1997. Labour also continues to campaign to pressure international governments to secure better and fairer trade rules, allowing the world’s poorest countries to develop their economies and reduce poverty.
Fairtrade sales are going from strength to strength. By supporting Fairtrade fortnight and buying Fairtrade products - such as coffee, bananas and chocolate - British consumers can help developing countries to reduce poverty. It is through concerted effort by governments, retailers and the public that we can really help to improve the lives of millions of people worldwide.
